Overview

Homeland: Those existing beyond the courts are known among the Outsiders as Pariahs and may be found anywhere. They are most commonly found in places where the other courts remain weak through contested ground and fighting among themselves. In North America and Australia where many courts vie for control, there are almost as many Pariahs as there are legitimate court members. The same holds true for regions of Central Europe and the Middle East, although in these places, the Pariahs are expected to choose a court quickly or else they find themselves at a serious disadvantage and they rarely last more than a few years on their own. In the lands where Courts are strong such as Asia and the deepest parts of Africa, Pariahs are quite rare as they find the sheer numbers of Court members around them tend to draw them into the politics of the spirit worlds.

Description: Those who exist apart from the courts usually do so for a reason, and this is usually because they are either very weak and have yet to draw the attention of a local court, or because they are very strong and feel they have transcended the need for such social groups. As they exist outside formal groups, the Pariahs tend to be very strong willed and reluctant to take orders from those around them. They also have a tendency to develop strange and erratic powers simply because they lack the formal training properly understand the elemental energies that make up their spiritual selves. In recent decades, many Pariahs have taken on the role of sorcerors, mutants and comic-book style heroes. This has been a situation watched very carefully by a number of the courts.

Appearances: Most of the Pariahs look just like the citizens they live amongst; perhaps they don’t realise they have a spiritual form they can manifest, or perhaps they simply fear revealing the spiritual side knowing that mortal authorities will seek to research or kill them. Those Pariahs who have started to learn something of their spirit side often retain forms that are distinctly inhuman, preferring to embody the creatures of myth and legend, or monsters from more modern tales. When they do take on an inhuman form, most pariahs subconsciously choose to appear as different to the local courts that they can (for example, if the local court bare many members with animal features, the pariah will generate unnatural skin or eye colouration).

Psychology/Philosophy: Just as there are a wide variety of appearances among the Pariahs, so are there a wide variety of belief systems. In the most ancient times, most pariahs believed that they were the chosen emissaries of some god; perhaps they may have been a shaman or priest, or possibly a direct descendant of the beings of myth. Over the past few centuries though, the belief has flourished that they had been cursed in some way by the gods and needed to redeem themselves after their fall from grace. In recent years a new scientific belief has arisen among many Pariahs; these new generations of Outsiders believe that there might be something in their genetic make-up which has given them powers and weaknesses beyond the usual scope of the citizens around them. A high number of Pariahs never worry about the metaphysical implications of their powers; they simply use these benefits to their own advantage and avoid their weaknesses wherever possible.

Haven: Those who live beyond the great courts usually learn very quickly to keep a low profile to avoid trouble, or else they cling very closely to the allies whom they have made. The members of lesser courts tend to be fiercely devoted to the ways of their local people, following ways that have been passed down for centuries. It is among these lesser courts where the ethnic minorities of the world flourish among the outsiders, and it is in these havens where the artefacts of Vikings, Polynesians, Mongols and dozens of other cultures find their place. Those who choose to walk a solitary path tend to either have very secure, or very well hidden lodgings, often both. Hidden within these dwellings tend to be a wide range of objects showing more eclectic tastes than the major courts, the Pariahs will often choose different things from a wide variety of cultures, both historical and part of mainstream popular culture to reflect the powers they have developed and the way they view them. Some have collected vast libraries of books concerning conspiracy theories and the occult, while others may base their beliefs on comic books or even role-playing games.

Organization: The dozens of lesser courts scattered across the world are organised in many different manners and were born in assorted ways. Many began their lives as factions of larger courts who splintered into their own paths due to differences in belief or attitudes; but a high number have existed completely independent of the larger courts, they have simply evolved far from the politics of the larger courts, or have remained steadfast in their beliefs when the other courts have tried to absorb them. More notable though are the courts that once shared the status of great court but have fallen from this position; particularly the Court of Marble which once dominated the Greek and Roman empires before succumbing to the ferocity of the Court of Blood, and the mythical Court of Orichalcum which lost it’s mundane lands completely in ancient times to exist completely within the spirit worlds. Among the Pariahs there are a number of factions that have developed in recent centuries; the most notable of these are known as the Guilds, who have dedicated themselves to researching the potential powers of the elements and teaching that knowledge to any outsider regardless of their court or race. While the Guilds are willing to accept anyone as students, it is common for the courts to consider membership of the Guild schools to be a heresy.
